Concerned About Meeting the Weight Requirements for MEPS?

Your weight can affect whether you meet the initial height, weight, or body-composition standards used during the military enlistment process.

Each military branch has its own requirements, and those standards may vary based on factors such as:

  • Your military branch

  • Your height

  • Your age

  • Your sex

  • Your current weight

  • Your body composition

  • Current enlistment policies

If you have been told that you need to lose weight before MEPS, the best time to begin is as early as possible.

Waiting until the final days before your appointment may lead to extreme dieting, unsafe dehydration, or other last-minute methods that can negatively affect your energy, strength, and overall readiness.

A structured plan gives you time to work toward your goal through consistent nutrition, accountability, progress tracking, and healthier daily habits.

Always confirm your current requirements and MEPS timeline with your recruiter.

Military Requirements to Join the U.S. Armed Forces

Joining the U.S. military involves more than meeting height and weight standards. All applicants must complete the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) process and meet the eligibility requirements established by their chosen branch of service.

While specific requirements may vary, most applicants should be prepared to meet standards related to age, citizenship or legal residency, education, medical history, physical fitness, and body composition.

If excess weight is one of the obstacles standing between you and your military goals, the Nationwide THINNR® Weight-Loss Protocol is designed to help eligible participants work toward those goals before attending MEPS.

For complete and up-to-date enlistment requirements and information about the MEPS process, visit the official U.S. Army website or speak with your military recruiter.

What Happens If You Are Overweight at MEPS?

If your weight is above the initial standard for your military branch, you may be required to complete an additional body-composition assessment. The exact process and requirements depend on the branch you are entering and the policies in effect at the time of your MEPS appointment.

Being over the initial weight standard does not necessarily mean that your military goal is over. Your recruiter may explain your available options, provide your current requirements, or recommend that you lose weight before continuing through the enlistment process.

If you have been advised to lose weight before MEPS, beginning early gives you more time to:

  • Follow a structured nutrition plan

  • Build healthier daily habits

  • Increase your activity gradually

  • Track your progress

  • Protect your strength and energy

  • Avoid unsafe last-minute weight-loss methods

Always ask your recruiter to confirm your branch’s current height, weight, and body-composition requirements. Body Balance Sculpting and THINNR™ cannot determine military eligibility or guarantee that you will meet MEPS requirements.
